At first it was a dirt road that wouldn`t stand out among the streets of small-town Tía Juana. But Revolución Avenue is now known for being the most remarkable in Tijuana, having national and international fame. It`s relevance is due to the economic importance it has for the city, offering a dynamic commercial front and multiple services for all local, domestic and foreign visitors.
From it’s humble beginnings, Tijuana inhabitants identified tourism as a development opportunity. Already at the dawn of the 19th century and at the first decades of the 20th, a constant crossing of California residents flowed South to buy goods. Revolución Avenue was then known as Olvera Street and was the first paved road back then. It slowly became the main economic development pole of the city, thanks to its attractiveness that lured American tourists into town.
The name of the street changed with time. After being known as Olvera street, in 1932 it was named Revolución Avenue and its fame kept growing. Most of Tijuana’s nightlife revolves around it, as well as many important restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries, also part of the attractions. You can also find a myriad of Mexican arts and crafts shops and in between have your polaroid taken with the burrocebras, the zebra-like donkeys that have become a true Tijuana icon.
